Douglas has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium and arrives 24 hours after City confirmed the £54million arrival of Kyle Walker from Tottenham.

It is understood the fee could rise to £14.1m, and the midfielder is expected to be loaned out to City’s sister club Girona for the forthcoming campaign.

The 19-year-old joins a growing list of Brazilians at the club, after fellow new signing Ederson Moraes completed his £35million move from Benfica earlier this summer.

Midfielders Fernandinho and Fernando will be expected to mentor the youngster, while striker Gabriel Jesus will also be on hand to help Douglas settle into life in Manchester.

In a short post on Twitter, the club wrote: ‘City are delighted to announce the signing of Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz #WelcomeDouglas.’

Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, said: ‘We are pleased to welcome Douglas. He is an exciting player with great potential, and everyone here is looking forward to helping him develop his talent and progress in the game.’

The club have announced that they will make a further statement about Douglas’ immediate development pathway in the coming days.

Having undergone his medical at City Football Academy, the player is set to join partner club Girona on loan, where he be able to experience regular first-team in La Liga.

Having invested an eight-figure fee in the highly-rated Brazil Under-20 midfielder, City are confident of viewing him as more than a sell-for-profit signing and will be hoping he can team up with compatriots Jesus and Co in Pep Guardiola’s first team in the coming years.
