OurMumuDonDo Movement educates Imo State electorates on exercising their voting rights

Date:

On 15 May 2018, the OurMumuDonDo Movement, Imo State Chapter carried out a voter education exercise for over a hundred people in Imo State. The event, which had about 250 participants in attendance included students from the entire seven universities in Imo state, artisans, politicians, technocrats, activists, and respected statesmen, signified the pinnacle of a new beginning for electorates in Imo State. For the mission of the OurMumuDonDo Movement was clear on the day – to sensitize the electorates on the benefits and consequences of exercising and compromising their franchise during the election.

The movement critically dwelled on voter enlightenment, highlighting several consequences of trading votes and election malpractices. With passionate elocutionists like Dr. Sam Amadi and Chief Dim Pasa; a representative of elder statesmen, Professor Francis Dike (SAN), the audience was profoundly educated on their civic responsibilities and crucial role in nation building.

Before the event came to an end, participants were highly encouraged to take the message back to the people in their respective communities and spheres of influence. The event ended with a unanimous agreement from all participants that the electorates in Imo State, and by extension in Nigeria, must now demand a people-focused social contract from political candidates before they are elected into political offices, across all strata and echelons.

In the same vein, the OurMumuDonDo Movement was in Awka, Anambra state, on 17 May 2018, to inaugurate its state chapter in the state. The movement kickstarted its activity for the day with a road parade, enlightening the public on voter/civic responsibility from Aroma bus-stop to Enugu-Ukwu Civic Center, where a subsequent Town Hall meeting/inaugural event was held. With about 150 attendees ranging from civil servants to technocrats, to activists, retired civil servants, traders, farmers, students, and other representatives from government and security agencies, the deep sense of cultural pride of the Anambrarians was an unignorable cynosure of the event.

However, like the people of Imo State, the people of Anambra state passionately received the message of the OurMumuDonDo Movement on the essence of public participation in politics and the people taking their place as agents of social change. The movement also espoused the culture of public demand of accountability and transparency from public servants.

One of the guest speakers, Mrs. Eberechukwu Anigbogu, encouraged the attendees to get their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) which she explained, in perhaps the most simplified form, as the weapon given to the common people by their enemies (politicians) to defeat them. That is, the PVC is simply a tool to reject a vegetative government and enthrone a progressive government of the people. As the event was getting close to an end, a consensus agreement was reached by the entire attendees that the Nigerian electorates must needs demand a social contract from political candidates before they get into government so they can be held accountable and judged by the contract, whether they fail or succeed.

Consequently, the movement’s chapter in Anambra state was inaugurated with Comr. Ndubuisi Vincent Nweke appointed as the State coordinator. The OurMumuDonDo Movement State Coordinators are appointed by the movement’s Central Executive Council after months of scrutiny. Comrade Ndubuisi can be reached at 08036247812.
