420 Nigerians die daily from Tuberculosis, 300,000 undiagnosed TB patients untreated.

Chevron In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, (FMOH),

Lagos State Ministry (LSMOH) and the World Health Organization, held a Public Private Mixed, PPM, summit for Tuberculosis control in Nigeria. It is time to End TB in the country.

The summit was aimed at bringing together the Private Health Sector, and the Private corporate organizations to discuss support for TB control, discuss and proffer solutions to challenges of financing TB programs in Nigeria and to propose strategies to improve energy among different stakeholders to harness and leverage on available resources to end TB in Nigeria.

Dr, Wondimagegnehu Alemu a (WHO) country Representative Nigeria said TB is a killer disease that continues to kill globally, with the disease killing over 11 million people yearly.

Nigeria is ranked among the countries with highest number of the TB disease in Africa, According to the 2017 Global Report, and fourth value countries for TB, as 420, people  dies daily of TB and other multi health disease cases he said.

He noted that every hour 47 Nigerians develop Acute TB, HIV/AIDS and other deadly disease, adding that it is becoming more worrisome how Nigeria’s die of TB,  simply  because the basic amenities to prevent the disease is unavailable.

The Coordinator, National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, Dr. Adebola Lawanson, on her part said TB prevalence rate in Nigeria is alarming and many people are nonchalant about it.

“TB kills more people than plane crash and if we can put in place measure to safeguard the aviation industry, we need to checkmate the spread of TB”, she said.

According to her, there are over 300,000 undiagnosed TB patients even as three in four patients are not on treatment.

She further said that each of the undiagnosed TB patients is capable of infecting 10 to 15 people yearly.

Lawanson applauds the Agbami parties , which include Famfa Oil Limited, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Statoil Nigeria Limited and Petroleo Brasileiro Nigeria Limited, for their social investment in TB and other communicable diseases, urging other private organizations to follow suit.

 

Dr. Jide Idris the Houonurable commissioner for Health Lagos State, on his part calls for more support for from the Private to fight the killer disease.

Lagos state has the highest burden of TB cases in Nigeria, due low budget estimate and large population size he said.

He explained further more that 90% funds in 2017 used to fight the disease came from the Lagos state budget, adding that the gap in which TB operates in the country is very high, moreover more fund is needed to close such gap, that is  why will need 100% support from the private sector he said.

Director, Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited (A Chevron company), Mr. Rick Kennedy revealed that the parties is committed to building mutually-beneficial partnerships and supporting Government efforts in the Nigerian health sector. Our support is inspired by our view that quality healthcare delivery provision is a crucial social service that will help build a healthy citizenry and develop the country.

As part of their contributions to TB management, the Agbami parties have provided treatment for 63,629 beneficiaries, detected 5,011 presumptive cases while 1,353 cases were detected.

In a data presentation on behalf of the Agbami parties at the summit, Dr Olubukunola Fagade, Medical Director Chevron represented by  Dr. Chinwe Okala explained that the group’s strategic choice of intervention in TB is designed to achieve access to services, early detection and proper management of the disease as well as other chest and lung diseases in Nigeria, in alignment with the national strategy.

Since 2008, the parties have built, equipped and donated 25 chest clinics to institutions and hospital across the country as part of their contributions in support of the efforts to control, treat and eradicate TB from the country. “Additionally, 25 GeneXpert machines and X-ray machines were donated with Chest Clinics to 25 government-owned hospitals in Nigeria. A total of N2.2 billion has been spent on the Chest Clinic projects to date,” she added.

Agbami parties have also carried out TB awareness campaigns in Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Nasarawa and Oyo States in partnership with local non-government organizations and the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLC) to further raise awareness on the dangers of Tuberculosis, and also improve access to treatment and care, also provide training and counseling on treatment and management of the infection.
