He did not elaborate although he said he is “solidly with Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in his quest to transform Edo State.”

The governor’s office said it was yet to receive the resignation letter of the Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area born Akerele.

However, the governor later announced Osaze Ethan Uzamere to replace Akerele.

The former CoS, confirming his resignation yesterday, said: “My decision to exit the government is based on administrative and governance grounds.

“I am solidly with Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in his quest to transform Edo State. His mission and vision resonate with mine.

“This is all I have to say, I will like to be given opportunity to go private, as I part ways administratively with the government, based on principles.

“I thank (His Excellency) for the opportunity given to me to serve in this capacity and also thank to His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, for his immense leadership and support during the period I served in this capacity. May his reign be long and peaceful. Amen”

He was appointed on November 14, 2016.

I’m yet to receive my Chief of Staff’s resignation letter – Obaseki

The Special Adviser to Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said yesterday that the governor was yet to receive any official communication of the resignation of Mr. Akerele.

Osagie in a statement said: “In the past few hours, it emerged on social media that the Chief of Staff, Mr Taiwo Akerele, has resigned his appointment with the Edo State Government.

“While the governor has not received any formal communication to this effect, he believes that this is a personal decision of Mr Akerele.

“However, whenever the resignation letter gets to the governor, he would accept it, and he wishes Akerele all the best in his future endeavours.”

Akerele’s exit came against the backdrop of the fierce quarrel between Obaseki and the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole who is also the immediate past governor of the state.

Obaseki is seeking re-election in the polls slated for later in the year.

Resignation is welcome development, says Imuse

However, the Chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Colonel David Imuse has described the resignation of Akerele, as a welcome development.

Imuse who leads the pro-Oshiomole fraction of APC in the state spoke in a telephone interview yesterday that the development was an indication that people are beginning to see the deficiencies in the administration of Obaseki.

The APC boss in Edo State said it was time for all well-meaning party members to join forces with the party to enable it build a very strong and formidable administration in the state.

Imuse said with the resignation of Akerele, “a dumb and deaf does not need to be told that the market has closed. It is better for an actor to quit the stage when the ovation is loudest.

“We are pleased that the former CoS, who was one of the disciples of Obaseki had realised this is no government. His resignation is a welcome development and it shows that he too had seen what some of us saw many months ago.

“He is highly welcome. I think he (Akerele) will be better off coming to the mainstream of the party and let’s do the needful to move our party forward.”

The party chairman advised other political appointees of Obaseki to take a queue from the former CoS and do the needful, assuring them that the party would be ready to have them back.

Obaseki names Uzamere as Chief of Staff

In a statement on Saturday by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, he said the appointment of Uzamere takes immediate effect.

Uzamere is the son of Senator Ehigie Uzamere, who represented Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly between 2007 and 2011.

An investment banker, Uzamere, 38, is a graduate of Stony Brook University, New York, where he majored in Computer and Electrical Engineering.

He has had stints with Lehman Brothers and South Grade Engineering, among others.

A professional, he had, before his appointment, served as Executive Assistant to Obaseki.
