Tuesday, 7 July 2020, the Federal Government will embark on school decontamination in preparation for resumption as publicized on Monday by the Minister of Environment, Muhammad Mahmood.

The intention to fumigate schools as a measure to reduce the spread of COVID-19 was revealed at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja. He confirmed the adequacy of the fumigation team and clarified the effectiveness of the chemicals as the motive behind delay in the sterilization process.

Mahmood said “The delay is because it is better to disinfect and decontaminate within short period of time so that kids will be going back into these classes when they have been freshly decontaminated”

The decontamination is said to be carried out across the country at centres that will be used for educational purpose.

He said “Earlier, I told you that we have sat with the Ministry of Education and be have the list of all the schools that need to be disinfected before resumption. Well, what we plan to do now is to (decontaminate) the centres that will be used”.

Parents of school children have been guaranteed the safety of schools for their wards upon resumption.

The Minister said “So it is between tomorrow (Tuesday) and the rest of the week. We have enough teams and people that will engage to get that done. So rest assured that your kids will be returning to a safe environment when they resume.”
