Ikpeazu said this on Tuesday during the first Consultative Forum of the Seventh Executive of the state chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) held in Umuahia.

The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Anthony Agbazuere, said that the state government was desirous to build a “virile local government”.
He, therefore, charged stakeholders in the system to support government’s efforts to achieve its agenda.

He commended the Local Government Service Commission, Local Government Audit and entire staff of the commission for their support to the government on all union matters.

Ikpeazu lauded the leadership of Abia NULGE for creating a platform for the government and council workers to interact and exchange ideas on critical issues of mutual interest.

He assured the union of government’s determination to pay priority attention to the welfare of workers, adding that government would contribute to the success of the forum.

In a speech, Chief Gabriel Onyendilefu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stated that the place of NULGE in the sustenance of development was indisputable.

Onyendilefu described NULGE as a formidable group with the capacity to encourage productivity among its members.
He further said that the activities of the union should be mutually beneficial to its members and the government to encourage productivity in the system.

He urged local government employees to shun truancy, insubordination and unprofessional practices.

The commissioner expressed worry over the poor state of the nation’s economy, which had affected government at all levels.
He said that a supervisory framework had been created to ensure that government delivered on its promises to the citizenry.

Earlier, Chief Okezie Ugboaja, the Chairman of the commission, expressed concern over some of the challenges militating against the growth of the system.

Ugboaja charged participants at the event to participate actively in the event in order to come up with ideas that would help to change the negative narratives associated with the local government system.

Also, Mr Ikechi Nwigwe, the state Chairman of NULGE, said that the forum was introduced as part of his efforts to run a transparent and accountable administration.

Nwigwe said that the forum would provide an avenue for the union to harness its prospects and also tackle its challenges in the state and beyond.

He called on the state government to expedite action toward the payment of outstanding salaries of local government workers.
