Lagos, Oct 14, 2020 The Lagos State Coconut Development Authority (LASCODA) has collaborated with the University of Lagos (Unilag) to plant coconut seedlings at the institution’s Lagoon Waterfront to promote coconut development in the state.

The General Manager of LASCODA, Mr Dapo Olakulehin, said the exercise was in continuation of the Coconut Renewal Initiative of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to plant 140,000 seedlings in the state.

He said 200 seedlings would be donated to the institution as part of the exercise.

He said that in order to ensure that the seedlings were planted at the right locations, the LASCODA team carried out the distribution and symbolic planting exercise with the involvement of the top management staff of the university.

He said that the exercise was meant to promote coconut development activities in Lagos State through the distribution of the coconut seedlings to various quarters.

“It is to further increase awareness on the array of invaluable economic, health and environmental benefits that coconut offers amid many of its other social benefits manifestations.

“In Nigeria, coconut has a cultural affinity with the lagoon and coastal areas such as Lagos Island and Badagry, so given priority to Unilag Lagoon waterfront is seen as very suitable area of choice,” he said.

Prof. Bola Oboh, Director, Research and Innovation Unit of the institution, led the collection and planting of the seedlings.

Prof. Khalid Adekoya of the Cell Biology and Genetic Department appreciated the kind gesture of the state government and sought for further collaboration in the area of research on genetic improvement on coconut.

Dr Jide Adedayo commended general manager of LASCODA for his unrelenting efforts at ensuring fulfillment of one of the pillars of T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda, ‘Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy’ through coconut value chain.

The exercise was witnessed by other top management of the institution, including Prof. Olatunji Babatola HOD, Dept of Geography and Mr Adelopo of the institution’s Parks and Garden Unit, amongst others.
