Jos, Oct. 16, 2020 The Plateau State Government on Friday urged residents of the state to join in the fight to eradicate malaria in the state.

Mrs Jerisha Daniel, State Primary Health Care (PHC) Education Officer, made the call during a one day Break-through Action-Nigeria Advocacy Communication and Social Mobilisation (ACSM) Activity Review and Orientation held in Jos.

Daniel, applauded the partnership and contributions of Break-through Action-Nigeria towards the fight against Malaria and Tuberculosis (TB).

She said that the citizens had a great role to play in seeing that all killer diseases like Malaria were eradicated in Plateau.

“Health is wealth, which without, we cannot pursue our desired growth and development as a state or nation.

“We all need to put all hands on deck to defeat malaria and TB as we did for Poliomyelitis. It’s only by so doing that we shall enjoy wellness, to pursue our careers and enjoy good living, ” she asserted.

The education Officer lamented the attitude of the citizens for failing to access the drugs being donated freely to public health centres by donors like USAID, World Bank, World Health Organisation (WHO) among others.

According to her, it is sad to see that some of these drugs in our health facilities are withdrawn without our citizens benefiting from them out of either sheer negligence or ignorance.

Daniel challenged the ACSM to do more about sensitising the public on the need to fight the Malaria disease through taking the necessary steps to prevent the carrier of the disease, Mosquitoes from spreading it.

Also speaking, Mrs Patricia Adams, Breakthrough Action Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in Plateau, disclosed that the agency in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health has targeted 707 wards in 244 Communities in the 17 LGAs to fight both Malaria and TB spread.

Adams expressed optimism at obtaining positive results in fighting the diseases in the state, saying, “we used similar strategy during our Family Planning Campaign.”

Mr Harris Dawurang, a Director in the Ministry of Information and Communication, pledged the ministry’s readiness to help in the campaign against killer diseases through it’s media outfits, PRTV and the Nigeria Standard newspaper.

Mrs Comfort Adoon, PHC Officer, commended members of ACSM for the courage and resilience in their advocacy drive and expressed hope that more would be done to enlighten the public on the dangers of Malaria and Tuberculosis.
