Sheffield United 1-3 Tottenham: Spurs rebound with solid win vs. Blades

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur traveled to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United today in a match that shouldn’t have felt nervy but kind of was, at least before kickoff. Sheffield are rock bottom of the Premier League table and only have five points, but after a lackluster draw against Fulham no one was taking this match for granted.

And it went well! Serge Aurier scored from a header inside five minutes, Harry Kane added another, and Tanguy Ndombele scored a Puskas Award candidate and Spurs took three points over Sheffield, winning 3-1.

Tottenham’s starting lineup was an unusual 3-4-3, most likely to match Sheffield’s preferred tactics. Joe Rodon moved into the Premier League starting XI alongside Eric Dier and Ben Davies, who moved into central defense. Serge Aurier and Sergio Reguilon started as wingbacks. Pierre Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele were in the center of midfield, with Steven Bergwijn, Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane in the front line.

Key Moments
First Half

4’ — Bright start for Spurs after a bad clearance from Aaron Ramsdale leds to a half chance for Spurs. Kane sets up Hojbjerg just inside the box, but his shot is blocked. Later, Some nice interplay between Kane and Bergwijn. Steve gets the shot but it’s tipped over for a corner.

5’ — GOAL! SERGE AURIER! Great corner from Son, and Aurier gets a free head on it at the near post. 1-0 Tottenham!

22’ — Yellow card on Sheffield’s Norwood for tripping Kane on a counter.

33’ — Lots of touches in the box for Spurs, but precious few shots. Sheffield have found their footing and have had a couple of half-chances of their own.

38’ — Nearly a second! A cross into Sheffield’s box is blocked high by a defender. Kane tries to poke home the second effort but Ramsdale manages to get a hand to it and the Blades scramble it away.

40’ — GOAL! HARRY KANE MAKES IT 2-0! Hojbjerg started the play by dispossessing Norwood in midfield, then feeds Kane who fires it past a defender and in the bottom corner!

HALFTIME! Spurs take a 2-0 lead into the break but Sheffield are not playing like a side with only five league points. They’ve had some chances and Spurs will need to do well to see this match off.

Second Half

No changes at halftime for either team.

49’ — Yellow card for Sheffield’s Lundstram for fouling Stevie on a break. Match official Andre Marriner opted to whistle the play dead instead of playing advantage although Son was running onto it!

52’ — Huge penalty shout for Spurs after Ramsdale rushes out and ends up pulling back Son in the box, but Andre Marriner waves play on. Wild.

59’ — Goal to Sheffield. McGoldrick heads it home off of a cross by Fleck. 2-1.

61’ — WOWWWWWWW WHAT A GOAL FROM TANGUY NDOMBELE! Unbelievable finish! Tanguy got the ball in the box with his back to goal and just flicked it behind him over his head, off the post and in the net! AMAZING! 3-1 Spurs! Bergwijn with the assist.

67’ — First sub for Sheffield as Kean Bryan comes on for Oliver Norwood.

70’ — Liverpool loanee Rhian Brewster comes on for Sheffield, replacing Oliver Burke.

73’ — Another sub for Sheffield, as 34-year old journeyman striker Billy Sharp comes on for Chris Basham.

86’ — Finally, a sub for Spurs: Lucas Moura is on for Bergwijn. Meanwhile, Egan picks up a yellow for Sheffield.

90’ — Ohhh Kane nearly made it four. Wide open outside the box and somehow he puts it over the bar. Usually he buries that. Sub #2 for Spurs, as Carlos Vinicius is on for Son.

93’ — Final change for Spurs, as Davinson Sanchez comes on for literally 20 seconds before the end of the match. He replaces Reguilon.

FULL TIME: Spurs get the three points today and looked a lot better doing it than against Fulham. Solid win!

Reactions

Mourinho was right — this Sheffield team is better than their record... but not by much. They had some chances, but it was mostly sound and fury, signifying nothing. (Good goal from McGoldrick, though)
Tanguy Ndombele, oh my good lord. IDK if he meant that audacious flick goal, but the creativity to even attempt something like that was magnificent. He also went the full 90 and looked every bit as dominant at the 8 as he has at the 10.
Joe Rodon had a great match today. Good positioning, reads the ball well, some important tackles. It won’t be long before he’s regularly starting in the back line.
Impressed with Bergwijn today as well. Had an assist and looked lively in possession. One of his better matches for Spurs this season.
Harry Kane is now one goal away from tying Bobby Smith as Spurs’ second highest all time goal scorer.
Super impressed with Davinson Sanchez, who didn’t put a foot wrong all match.
The win puts Spurs up to fourth, and they can leap Liverpool into third if United wins at Anfield today.
