New York, Jan. 18, 2021 (dpa/NAN) United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has named Slovakian diplomat Jan Kubis as the UN’s new Libya envoy, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced on Monday.

The UN Security Council approved Kubis’ nomination on Friday.

He is to take office as special envoy to Libya in February, officially replacing Ghassan Salame, who resigned in March due to health reasons.

Guterres had run into difficulties filling the high-ranking post, as the preferred candidate, Nikolay Mladenov, surprisingly stepped back shortly before his nomination.

Stephanie Williams, an American, has held the post in the interim.

Kubis has decades of experience in crisis regions.

His prior experience includes serving as UN envoy in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He has also worked as Slovenia’s foreign minister.
