Jos, Jan. 20, 2021 Sen. Istifanus Gyang (PDP Plateau North) says the Plateau North Peace, Unity and Reconciliation football tournament which he has organised, is meant to promote peace and also discover talents in the zone.

Gyang said at the group stage draws of the maiden edition of the tournament held on Wednesday in Jos that the initiative was to bring together people of Plateau North, following the security challenges they went through.

He said that the tournament was very important as it was one of the platforms to consolidate peaceful coexistence in the zone.

“I appreciate the response that the tournament has attracted right from the grassroots and the level of interest and participation.

“During the preliminaries, the games were held in the six local government areas that make up the zone.

“I was personally present at one of the games and I saw the enthusiasm, display of football artistry and how our people were together and that captured the very essence of this tournament.

“Today we are witnessing another phase of the competition which are the draws for the 24 teams that qualified for the group stage,” he said.

The lawmaker thanked Nigeria’s ex-internationals, Sam Pam and Sambo Choji for their contribution to the success of the tournament.

He announced that the group stage of the fiesta would kick off on Saturday at Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos, with a game by ex-international footballers.

Dignitaries expected to witness the first match include: the former governor of Plateau, Sen. Jonah Jang, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase.

The Local Organising Committee Chairman, Kim Chong, said that all necessary arrangements had been put in place for a hitch-free tournament.

Naija247news reports that the 24 teams were drawn into four groups of four teams each.

Naija247news also reports that apart from the first match, the other group stage matches would be played at police headquarters field, Jos, and the Bukuru Mini Stadium.
