Enugu, Jan. 29, 2021 Mr Manfred Nzekwe, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Enugu State, has inaugurated Enugu State Cricket Association (ESCA) and charged the members to revive and develop the sport.
Mr Sunday Okafor, a Director in the Ministry, who represented the commissioner at the inauguration on Friday in Enugu at Best Western Hotels, Nza Street,said that it gave him joy to listen attentively and to hear the calibre of names of the association’s board members.
Naija247news reports that the association is made up of nine members, including the chairman, Mr Ogbonnaya Okogeri.
“Be that as it may, I commend your good efforts in coming together with the interest of revatalising and developing the game of cricket in the state.
“Enugu State loves sports and always gives each sport room to flourish.
“I want to assure you that the Enugu State Ministry of Youths and Sports and the state government will give you the necessary support,” he said.
He welcomed the representative of the India community that were in partnership with the association to ensure the sport thrived.
Mr Ogbonnaya Okogeri, the Chairman of the association, thanked the commissioner and the state government for administering the state well.
He said the warm welcome given him and his members when they visited the commissioner before the inauguration, gave them the confidence toward the task they were about embarking on.
“To whom much is given, much is expected; and I want to promise that we will not fail in this assignment.
“We are determined to revive cricket in Enugu and after we visited the commissioner, we raised a team that competed in a tournament within a week.
“Although the team did not win anything but they performed well,” Okogeri said.
Okogeri informed the commissioner that the chairman, Enugu Sports Club, Mr Onyeka Onwe, gave them a place to play cricket inside the sports club for now.
In appreciation, Mr Onyeka Onwe, the chairman Enugu Sports Club thanked the commissioner for inducting him into the board.
“Enugu Sports Club has developed youths in many sports and cricket will not only be played in the sports club but in Enugu State at large,” he said.
An Indian Community representative, Mr Isharad Jaghav Cormart, said the inauguration of the cricket association in Enugu was a progressive step.
“As football is a religion in Nigeria, so is Cricket a religion in India, and we the India community will give all necessary support to the development of the sport in Enugu and Nigeria at large.
