Abeokuta, Jan. 29, 2021 All players and officials of Gateway United Football Club tested negative to COVID-19 after results of the tests conducted on Monday were released on Friday, an official has said.
The club’s Acting General Manager, Niyi Soleye, described the development as a morale-booster ahead of the 2020/2021 Nigeria National League (NNL) season which begins on Wednesday.
While urging the players and officials to continue to follow the COVID-19 safety protocols so as to continue to be safe, he commended the state government for rendering assistance towards the conduct of the test.
“We thank the Ogun State Government for coming to our aid with the test, because this is a pointer to our readiness to hit the ground running.
“Nevertheless, I have advised the players not to be complacent. We all have to continue obeying all stipulated guidelines pertaining to COVID-19, especially the washing of hands and the use of facemask when in public,” Soleye said.
Also speaking, the Team Manager, Dare Osunsanya, urged the players and officials not to “drop the ball” but adhere strictly to the club’s dos and don’ts.
He expressed optimism about the club’s readiness, saying they would come out victorious in the new season.
“It’s cheering news but, due to the contagious nature of the virus, we have always ensured maximum adherence to COVID-19 regulations in camp, training and friendlies alike.
“Our preparation for the new season has been going on well, in spite of the postponement. Now, we have set our gaze on Wednesday when the NNL will kick off.
Our players are in high spirits, the technical crew and backroom staff are ever ready and our supporters are solidly behind us.
“With the Gov. Dapo Abiodun-led government stoutly behind us, we are ready to go. All we want is for our result to speak for us and that is what we are working towards,” Osunsanya said.
Naija247news reports that Gateway United will face Joy Cometh FC of Ikorodu at the Agege Stadium on Wednesday in their opening game of the 2020/2021 NNL campaign.
